Many From A Few
The first update has been released! You can grab the new build from this devlog, or from the main game page.
As a reminder, during this early phase of development, save file compatibility across versions is not assured. I recommend finishing your current 2/23/2024 build game before updating to 3/8/2024, or starting a new game in 3/8/2024.
This update includes many balance adjustments, and some new content as well. One bit of the new content I want to briefly focus on are the three new enemy types (one of which, Lizards, is pictured above.) I said in the main page post that adding these three new types resulted in over 60 new possible enemies, but actually, that is an undercount.
It actually results in over 1800 new possible enemies. But how?
When you start a new game of Interdict, a bestiary is generated as you progress by mixing together different species of enemies (lizard, rat, berserker, etc.) with different flavors (fiery, regenerating, poisonous, etc.) There are roughly twenty species and twenty flavors currently implemented, resulting in the over 460 combinations quoted on the main page, and 60 of those come from the three new species.
The remaining 1740 come from the Elite and Champion system: other than on the first floor of the dungeon, enemies in individual encounters are sometimes given an Elite or Champion modifier that gives them a third "component" to their makeup. They might occasionally go into dangerous frenzies, radiate a protective aura that shields their allies, convert slain enemies into fireballs... there are over 30 possibilities in the Elite and Champion list. Taking the roughly 60 new combinations of species and flavor and combining those with the 30 Elite and Champion modifiers is how you get to the 1800+ number.
However, since you only see a small number of Elites and Champions per run, I figure it is more accurate to only count the species and flavor combos when describing the general gameplay, which is why the lower number is used.
Anyway, enough babble out of me. Go enjoy the new build, and good luck on your adventure!
